Boost your CRS score: 10 concrete levers to clear the cutoff
The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) ranks Express Entry candidates on 1,200 points. A handful of well-targeted points can make the difference between an invitation and a long wait. Here are the most effective levers — all testable in our free CRS simulator.
1. Retake the language test (often the best ROI)
Moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 in English can earn up to 50 extra points in human-capital factors and trigger skill-transferability bonuses. If you're French-speaking, NCLC 7+ adds +25 to +50 points.
2. Add French as a second official language
With English at CLB 5+ and French at NCLC 7+, you gain 50 bonus points. Often the highest-ROI lever for English-speaking profiles.
3. Get your credentials assessed (ECA)
A master's or doctoral degree assessed by WES/ICAS can be worth +15 to +25 points versus a bachelor's. Essential before applying.
4. Accumulate Canadian work experience
Each year of qualifying Canadian experience adds up to 80 points. A post-graduation work permit (PGWP) or a closed work permit are major accelerators.
5. Optimize your spouse's profile
If your spouse is accompanying you, their languages, education and experience can add up to 40 points. Sometimes swapping principal applicant changes everything — test both scenarios in our simulator.
6. Target a provincial nomination (PNP)
A Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) nomination adds 600 points — virtually an ITA guarantee. Identify aligned provinces on the CanadaPath score page.
7. Land an LMIA job offer
A valid LMIA-backed offer is worth 50 or 200 points depending on the role (NOC TEER 0/1 or executive).
8. Study in Canada
A Canadian post-secondary credential of at least one year is worth 15 or 30 points, plus Canadian-experience eligibility and PGWP access.
9. Have a sibling in Canada
A brother or sister who is a Canadian citizen or PR is worth 15 points. Often missed.
10. Submit early and refresh your profile
Category-based rounds (healthcare, STEM, trades, French) have much lower CRS cutoffs. Keep your profile fresh and watch the categories matching your NOC in our Express Entry draws history.
